Living In Hawaii

Living In Honolulu
by Zig Noda

I moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in the Spring of 2001 after my father passed away. Prior to this I had always wanted to get away from the smog and traffic of Los Angeles and Orange County, California for a number of years.

Honolulu and Hawaii is a beautiful place with beautiful people. It’s not for everyone, but for those that appreciate the “local style” of living, they always end up calling Hawaii home no matter where they are at.

As with any growing metropolis Honolulu has it’s problems with traffic congestion but it’s still reasonable compared to Southern California traffic. It also still leaves a lot to be desired as far as music, arts and international culture is involved, but for Polynesian culture and Asian culture mixed with an American big city Honolulu is tops. I’ve been to Japan, Paris, France, Mexico, Chicago, South Carolina, Arizona, Northern California and other places, but Honolulu as a city has a certain laid back vibe yet international sophistication with a warm and down to earth mix of locals that are not found anywhere else. Call it the “Aloha style” or anything else, it’s unmistakable.

Of course there are those that come here and just don’t fit in and want to get off this small rock called Oahu as soon as they are able to, or as soon as they’ve burnt themselves out partying and doing nothing. But those that stay and that have an appreciation for the land or ‘aina, people and cultures always have a special place in their heart for Hawaii.

As of this writing it’s been over 7 years since my arrival to Oahu and although I frequently miss the pace and action in LA/OC, Honolulu is and will always be “home” to me no matter where I am at.
